Although
Greifswald is only a small university town on the edge of
Germany, its cultural scene is of course not similar to that one of
a one-horse town at the back of beyond. A
stylish theatre (452 seats) offers a variety of entertainment
throughout the year. There is also a large and important museum, the Pomeranian
State Museum.
A small museum called Caspar-David-Friedrich-Centre
devotes itself to the world renowned painter and most famous son of the town.
The building, in which the novelist Wolfgang Koeppen was born,
today houses the
Literature Centre of Western Pomerania. Two
further cultural highlights at Greifswald take place every year
in May and June: the Bach
Festival and the Festival
Nordic Sound
(Nordischer Klang), whose programmes are very extensive and do
not only focus on concerts and playing music. The
Social-Cultural
Centre of St
Spiritus offers a wide range of cultural activities and events throughout
the whole year.
 Last,
but not least, there are also some interesting museums
in the neighbouring towns.
