| There are many
places of interest you can visit in the hanseatic and university town of Greifswald:
The town hall and old patrician houses form a picturesque architectural group round the marketplace.
The historic gabled houses and three gothic churches St. Mary´s, St. Nicholas´ and St. James´ attest the wealth and importance of Greifswald in the Middle Ages. The imposing main complex of Greifswald´s university buildings in the town centre is not only the intellectual centre of Greifswald, but also of whole Western Pomerania. The harbour offers you a look at a lot of old ships. Going for a walk along Greifswald´s most beautiful promenade, the ramparts, is worthwhile, too.
You can also enjoy seeing small half timbered houses in the courtyard of the Hospice of St Spiritus. Last but not least a wooden bascule bridge and the ruins of a cistercian monastery in the suburbs of Wieck and Eldena could arouse your interest. Caspar David Friedrich´s paintings made these ruins world famous.
