In the neighbouring towns
you can also find a lot of places of interest and a great
variety of cultural activities. The following sections will
introduce to you some museums and exhibitions worth a visit:

St. Nicholas´
and the town hall of Stralsund
The Hanseatic town of
Stralsund lies about 30 km north-west of Greifswald. The ancient
town centre is by itself already a museum: Many buildings are
listed for their architectural or historical importance.
In Stralsund there are two important museums:
- the
Cultural-Historical Museum (Kulturhistorisches Museum) which
is located in the former Dominican monastery at
Mönchstraße and in an ancient warehouse at
Böttgerstraße.
- the German
Oceanographic Museum (Deutsches Meeresmuseum) which is also
located in the former Dominican monastery.
The former Franciscan
monastery (Johanniskloster) housing today the municipal archives
is also worth seeing. Many parts of the original monastery
buildings have been preserved.

At Anklam which is about
30 km south-east of Greifswald you can find an interesting
technical museum called Otto Lilienthal Museum. It is dedicated
to the pioneer glider experimenter and pilot Lilienthal who was
born in Anklam in 1848. Among other things you can have a look
at some of his reconstructed flying apparatuses.

On the island of Usedom
which is 30 km east of Greifswald there are also some
interesting museums:
Peenemünde, once home
of the army´s research institute which developed and built the
V-1 and V-2 missiles, offers today a Historical and
Technical Information Centre, a Submarine Museum, a Scientific
Museum called "Phaenomenta" and a Museum of Beds.
At Lüttenort near Koserow you can find the studio of the
painter Otto Niemeyer Holstein who died in 1984. On his small
