| The
marketplace of Greifswald is considered to be one of the most beautiful
marketplaces in Germany. Actually, it consists of two places: the main
marketplace forming a square of about 100 by 100 metres and the fish
market which is much more smaller. The red-painted town hall is situated
between these two marketplaces and connects them to each other.
The town hall was built about 1300, but has been rebuilt and redesigned several times since then. The red painting of its exteriors in 1999 completed the latest redesign. Today the structure of the town hall is mainly that of the 18th century, that is to say: baroque. Its eye-catching curved gable adorned with scrolls is a typical architectural feature of this art period. The town hall and a lot of historical houses form a beautiful architectural ensemble round the main marketplace. The oldest and most interesting buildings are two gothic residential store houses dating from the 15th and the 14th century. The house numbered 11 has got an extremely noteworthy decoration gable.
At the fish market fish is not sold any more. Today only the fountain of the fishermen refers to the original purpose of this smaller marketplace. The fountain sculptures which face the former biggest residential store house of Greifswald were made by Jo Jastram, a sculptor from Rostock. © Andreas Reuter |
