In 1437 the university of Rostock had to move to Greifswald after the town of Rostock had been placed under the bann of the empire and the Church. Their students and professors were staying in Greifswald for 5 years. Obviously the citizens of Greifswald did not enjoy being only a temporary university town, neither did their mayor Heinrich Rubenow who essentially initiated the foundation of a university at Greifswald some years later in 1456. It is therefore one of the oldest universities on the Baltic Sea. The Rubenow Monument, which was inaugurated at the quatercentenary of the university in 1856, pays tribute among other things to the efforts of Greifswald´s former mayor at founding the university. This monument made completely of metal faces the main building of the university (18th century) which houses the administration of the university and the office of the rector. Together with the Institute of Physics, the main auditorium and the eye clinic (all 19th century) the main building forms a beautiful architectural group round a courtyard, which is called the central university complex. The old university library also dating from the 19th century is nearby on the opposite side of the Rubenow Street.
The brick buildings of the university clinics at the western end of Loeffler Street were built in the second half of the nineteenth century. Have a look for example at the noteworthy façades of the Institute of Anatomy and the Institute of Pathology. Inside these institute buildings you can find impressive entrance and lecture halls, which are more than 100 years old. © Andreas Reuter |
