and Eldena which border on the eastern part of Greifwald are the coastal
suburbs of the town. Although they are only small villages of less than
1000 inhabitants, they attract a lot of visitors for some good reasons:
The ruins of the Cistercian monastery at Eldena have been made famous by several paintings of Caspar David Friedrich who was really fascinated by this beautiful motif near his birthplace. The monastery founded in 1199 was destroyed during the Thirty Years´ War in the 17th century when troops of the Catholic League occupied Greifswald. Nevertheless there is still a lot left of the original buildings. By the way, the Cistercian Monastery at Eldena was the cradle of the town of Greifswald. Settlers attracted by the monastery built the first houses in the area of today´s town centre of Greifswald. At Eldena you can also find Greifswald´s bathing beach.
Going from Eldena to the fishing village of Wieck you must cross a wooden bascule bridge. This bridge which spans the river Ryck was built in the seccond half of the 19th century. Starting from it you can either walk along the harbour promenade of Wieck or along the towpath which leads you to the town centre of Greifswald. At Wieck you can also enjoy seeing a lot of old thatched houses, many of which are listed buildings. © Andreas Reuter |
